| Hemas Hospitals score another 'first' with the latest technique in cataract surgery |
|
|
|
| |

Hemas Hospital, Wattala is now equipped to perform cataract surgery using the latest available technique known as 'Micro incision' cataract surgery (MICS). This revolutionary surgery is done with state-of-the-art equipment called Stellaris Vision Enhancement System. Hemas is the first private hospital in Sri Lanka to introduce this form of cataract surgery. “It is a super safe, painless, speedy and super accurate technique of performing cataract surgery", says Dr Shamintha Amarathunga, Consultant Eye Surgeon. "The recovery after the surgery is instantaneous. There’s no use of pad or bandage and the patient can resume work in one day. The incision made on the eye is 50 % smaller than the regular surgery which makes it easy to heal. MICS results in less astigmatism and lesser requirement of post operative Spectacles. It offers enhanced quality of postoperative vision and with improved IOLs one enjoys an enhanced vision contrast.”
"We are glad to become the first private hospital in Sri Lanka to introduce this safe and advanced technique of cataract surgery at a very affordable price", commented Dr. Aruna Rabel, Director Medical Services, Hemas Hospital Wattala. "Since it is very beneficial for diabetic patients and as minimal restrictions are imposed following surgery, we see a significant increase in the demand for MICS."
He added that Hemas Hospitals is keeping to the promise that the services would be continuously improved by introducing the latest technology available in the world coupled with the best medical professionalism. "We have also strengthened our eye unit with a latest OCT eye scanner," he said.
Cataract is a common disease of the eye when the clouding of lens occurs in old age. The only successful treatment available for cataract is the removal of the clouded eye lens through surgery.
The improvements in cataract surgery over the past few decades have been truly remarkable. In the early days it was only the removal of the lens and the patients had to wear spectacles with thick lenses after the surgery. This was followed by the invention of intra ocular lens which is a lens implanted in the eye. The size of the incision made on the eye has been reduced from over 10 mm to 2.6 mm with the invention of phacoemulsification technique and the foldable lenses. This was called small incision cataract surgery.
With the introduction of the latest technique, it has been further reduced to 1.8 mm. Because of the smaller incision, it has been renamed micro-incision surgery. A 3rd generation ultra thin foldable Intra ocular lens called MIL (Micro incision Intra ocular Lens) between 1.6-1.8 mm thick is implanted after removal of the clouded lens.
Hemas Hospital, Wattala, which began its operations in December 2008 has made a name for itself in a short period of time as a patient-friendly hospital with the latest state-of-the-art equipment and technology. The Hospital boasts of Sri Lanka's first state-of-the-art open magnet MRI scanner, “Maathru” value added baby delivery package, “Suwa Sathkam” fixed price packages for surgery and its laboratory, the only fully automated laboratory in Sri Lanka.
Hemas Hospitals is a subsidiary of Hemas Holdings. Hemas is one of Sri Lanka's leading conglomerates with a focus on five key sectors - FMCG, Healthcare, Transportation, Leisure and Power Generation.

International (ACHSI) which is Australia’s

that applies to both Hemas Hospitals facilities in Wattala and Galle

An

process used by health care organizations to accurately assess their level of
performance in relation to established standards and to implement ways to
continuously improve"
Accreditation
systems are structured so as to provide objective measures for the external
evaluation of quality and quality management. At the heart of these schemes is
a list of standards which, ideally, serve to assess evaluate in a systematic
and comprehensive way the standards of professional performance in a hospital.

| First Private Hospital in Sri Lanka to introduce Revolutionary Capsule Endoscopy |
|
|
|
| |
Hemas Hospitals, who have constantly strived towards providing the best medical care to the nation, brings another first by introducing capsule endoscopy. Hemas Hospital is the first private Hospital in the industry to provide the facility in Sri Lanka.
Capsule endoscopy is a revolutionary new diagnostic tool for the detection of small bowel disease. As the name implies, capsule endoscopy makes use of a swallowable capsule which contains a micro video camera, LED lights and a transmitter. It is the only technique that allows non-invasive endoscopic examination of the entire small bowel without sedation.

Capsule endoscopy is mostly recommended for patients with bleeding of unknown origin (obscure bleeding) of the intestines. The commonest reasons for such bleeding are arteriovenous malformations, small bowel tumors, and ulcers which are commonly missed at standard endoscopy and imaging examinations.
When performing this test a jacket with sensor devices is worn over the abdomen by the patient which captures and stores the images transmitted by the capsule while passing through the digestive tract. The stored images are subsequently downloaded to a computer which allows the physician to view and diagnose problems. The main advantage of capsule endoscopy is the ability to non-invasively evaluate the inside of the entire small bowel. Conventional endoscopic techniques allow examination of only the most proximal and distal portions of the small bowel, leaving the majority of the small bowel unexamined.
Speaking of the advantages of this procedure, a hospital spokesperson stated that it’s pain free, has no exposure to harmful radiation like in X Ray or CT Scans and no sedation is required. He further added that this procedure can be done as a day procedure and has no complications or side effects.
Hemas Hospital stays true to its promise of being the future of family healthcare by becoming the pioneer in introducing technological advancements to the medical industry |

| Hemas Hospital introduces latest scanner |
|
|
|
| |

Hemas Hospital - Wattala has introduced the latest Realtime 4D ultrasound scanner thereby improving the gynecological and pregnancy services considerably.
RealTime 4D imaging technology displays three-dimensional ultrasound images as they happen, which allows the visualization of fetal movements and help in other diagnostic procedures. It enables the doctor to check whether the mother-to-be is doing well and helps to assess whether or not the baby has congenital abnormalities like cleft lip and spina bifida which are readily recognizable with the 4D. It helps to identify any deficiencies in the growth pattern as well. The new equipment can also accurately analyse the function of the fetal heart by capturing a full fetal heart cycle beating in real time.
Dr. Sunil Fernando, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist said that by using this scanner on pregnant mothers during their 12th - 13th weeks of pregnancy, it is possible to check for several genetic disorders of the babies. “Using this technique, disorders such as Down syndrome could be detected up to an 80 percent accuracy level. We also do a special ultrasound scan called the anomaly scan during the 23rd week which helps to diagnose anomalies of the babies’ important organs including the heart, brain, kidneys etc. and the function of fetal blood circulation,” he said.
The new equipment also enhances the ‘Maathru’ package that Hemas Hospital has introduced for expectant mothers. This specially designed package for baby delivery provides a number of services for a fixed charge which includes hospital charges, free antenatal classes, vaccination and essential tests for the baby for ten years at discounted rates.
Director Medical Services Dr. Aruna Rabel said “We have made this investment as a result of our commitment towards improving and expanding the hospital’s service offering. Our main focus at the moment is to improve patient care at our hospital through investments in staff and equipment”.
